The Buddha was an Indian Prince named Gautama Siddartu who achieved a state of enlightenment after prolongue study and practice of meditation. Following this revelation he spent the remaining forty years of his life wandering India and teaching the insights he had attained through his mindfulness. In later centuries the faith grew in strength reaching Sri Lanka and then moving onto Thailand and southeast Asia. Traders also took the doctrine north to Tibet, into China and onto Japan where Zen Buddhism developed. By the birth of Christ 543 years later the religion was well established.

Today Buddhism thrives across the world, mainly in Asia where Buddha figurines and statues are widely used to represent the prophet and provide a focus of worship for the 300 million followers across the globe. Buddhism is the overwhelming religion in Thailand and statues or figurines of the Buddha are found across the kingdom, from temple altars to amulets and massive structures such as the famous Big Buddha on Samui island.
